How is polythelia created?
How is polythelia created?
In embryogenesis, polythelia occurs during the third month of gestation, when the embryonic mammary ridge fails to regress normally—an event coincident with the development of the urogenital and other organ systems.
Can polythelia be removed?
Surgical procedures will vary depending on whether or not the third nipple is associated with underlying breast tissue. Isolated third nipples can be removed via a simple procedure, similar to the removal of a mole. For supernumerary nipples connected with breast tissue, a mastectomy (removal) can be done.
What causes polymastia?
Polymastia typically occurs in the womb during the development. During normal development, breast tissue will develop along the milk line, and additional tissue will disintegrate and be absorbed into the body. Polymastia occurs when the additional tissue doesn’t disintegrate before birth.
How common is polymastia?
About 2% to 6% of females and 1% to 3% of males are affected by this condition, a third of whom have more than one area of supernumerary tissue growth. Occurrence rates vary widely on the basis of ethnicity and gender, ranging from as low as 0.6% in Caucasians to as high as 5% in Japanese females.
Is Polythelia hereditary?
Polythelia are one of the most common forms of mammary tissue malformation. Most of the cases of polythelia appear to be sporadic, but some hereditary forms are known (1, 2). The specific mutations responsible for the sporadic or the hereditary forms of polythelia are generally not known.
Why do men have nipples?
Men have nipples because nipples develop in the womb before embryos become distinctly male or female. So by the time a Y chromosome kicks in to distinguish a fetus as male, the nipples have already secured their place.
Is polythelia hereditary?
Can men lactate?
“Actually a significant number of boys around the age of puberty do develop breasts,” he continues, “so the tissue is there, but it regresses.” In short, men may not have full-fledged breasts but they certainly can lactate, under extreme circumstances.
How do I get rid of polymastia?
To treat polymastia, it is generally recommended to completely remove the accessory breast tissue, also because of the risk for cancer development. It was reported that excision, liposuction, or both resulted in satisfactory outcomes.
Is polythelia normal?
Polythelia may indicate associated conditions, most notably urologic malformations or urogenital malignancies. The presence of supernumerary or accessory nipples (Fig. 3.5) is a relatively common, minor congenital anomaly that occurs in both sexes, with an estimated frequency of 1 in 100 to 1 in 500 persons.
Do men’s nipples have a purpose?
Looking over every detail of the human body, male nipples may be the most obviously useless. In females, they are essential for delivering life-sustaining breast milk to newborns. In men, they serve, well, no apparent purpose.
