My problem was the same, 4th gen i5 gt 840m laptop (but not asus, mine is an hp pavilion)…getting 12-14 fps on NFS rivals which is shooting upto 29-30fps as soon as I unplug the power cable (the game is locked at 30 fps so thats the highest it can go). And I am always using max performance mode, both plugged in and while using battery.
